Purpose/Background: The use of algorithms in different clinical scenarios has positively impacted morbidity and mortality outcomes. Despite increasing practice of robotic surgery, the general preparedness of the entire OR when an emergent conversion is required has proven to be inadequate. In an emergency conversion response for bleeding, it is crucial that staff are provided with adequate training and guidelines for individual roles. Today, the increasing demand for accessible education at any place at any time has prompted the development of innovative online learning solutions. This study describes the creation of an online educational module to improve the level of preparedness and to optimize emergency conversion response due to bleeding during robotic surgery.

Methods/Interventions: After a sentinel incident at our institution, a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted. A previously published algorithm for conversion during robotic surgery was identified. The algorithm content was reviewed to identify key components and learning objectives. It was adapted to our institutional and colorectal surgery practice. In collaboration with education designers and algorithm authors, we created a multimedia web-based education module The web-based module was designed using instructional design principles, incorporating interactive elements, multimedia resources, and assessments to enhance engagement. Pilot testing involved a group of participants who provided feedback on the module’s usability and educational effectiveness.

Results/Outcomes: Process: The development process included three steps. First, content adaptation was achieved after an open forum discussion and solicitation of feedback from experienced colorectal and robotic surgeons. Second, content transfer was completed in collaboration with senior designers from the education center and algorithm authors who provided use permission, to ensure content accuracy. Thirdly, content was reviewed with relevant quality officers and perioperative service leadership. The web-based module was built on a learning management system, featuring sections for theoretical foundations, practical applications, and self-assessment quizzes. Iterative revisions were made based on pilot testing feedback, focusing on clarity, interactivity, and learner engagement.

Conclusion/Discussion: The online educational module successfully translated the published algorithm into an accessible learning format, demonstrating effectiveness in improving understanding and application among participants. Future iterations will focus on implementing the algorithm amongst every robotic surgery user (surgeons, anesthesia, OR nurses, scrub techs and trainees) followed by the implementation of a simulation model for practical application of the algorithm while incorporating advanced analytics to track learner progress and outcomes.
