Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Explain best practices for maximizing billing & coding of E/M visits and procedures performed on the same service date.
  • Recognize when unlisted procedural codes are required for abdominal and anorectal procedures and how to bill for these procedures effectively.
  • Identify procedures commonly performed by Colorectal Surgeons that allow for high RVU generation.
  • Analyze the benefits of minimally invasive surgery approaches vs. open in the current healthcare environment driving maximized RVU production.

This symposium explores aspects of Colorectal practice that will allow attendees to maximize coding and billing opportunities by understanding efficiencies in practice. The interplay between E&M and procedural care will be discussed along with the use of “unlisted” codes which do not have a set RVU value and may not be reimbursed by payors. Additionally, high-RVU generating Colorectal cases will be reviewed and we will candidly discuss RVU generation per unit time when comparing minimally invasive and open procedures.
