David Stewart is a Professor of Surgery and the Division Chief of General Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Stewart completed a colorectal fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine/Barnes Jewish Hospital. He is an NIH and NSF funded researcher on C. difficile infection, focusing on the development of antisense antibiotics as a microbiome sparing therapy for CDI, as well as studying the role of N. glabrata in worsening CDI. He is a site reviewer for the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, and he serves on the COC Cancer Programs Site Reviewer Committee. Dr. Stewart is a reviewer for the NIH and NSF. He serves on the editorial boards of JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and he is the co-editor-in-chief of Surgery Open Science. He serves on the ABS question writing committee, as an associate examiner for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and as a member of the ACS Board of Governors.
