Dr. Melik Kagan Aktas is a postdoctoral clinical research fellow at The Ohio State University Department of Surgery, Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Aktas graduated from Cukurova University Faculty of Medicine (Adana, Turkiye) in July 2021. During his medical education, he contributed to numerous research projects, leading to 21 publications in high-impact Q1 journals, including Lancet Oncology, BJS, and Colorectal Disease.
In 2015, as a first-year medical student, Dr. Aktas joined the EuroSurg Collaborative, a research network for medical students and surgical trainees under the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP). Since 2018, he has served as the national leader of EuroSurg Turkiye, leading multicenter studies, coordinating teams across 45 institutions, and obtaining national ethics approvals. He has also presented his research studies at annual meetings of ESCP and the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG).
After graduation, Dr. Aktas worked as an emergency room physician at an education and research hospital in Istanbul for three months before joining the Department of Surgery at Acibadem University Atakent Hospital as a postdoctoral clinical research fellow, focusing on colorectal cancer studies. In February 2024, he began his current role as a postdoctoral clinical research fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew F. Kalady at The Ohio State University.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Aktas is a professional chess player, demonstrating strategic thinking and discipline in both his research and clinical work. He will apply for general surgery residency in the 2026 Match and aims to integrate advanced surgical training with cutting-edge research.
