Harleen Aujla, DO is currently a PGY-2 general surgery resident at Trinity Health Oakland in Pontiac, MI. She went to Indiana University Northwest for her undergraduate studies where she majored in biology. She earned her medical degree from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2023.
Harleen’s undergraduate research interest was in the field of microbiology. For example, she conducted a study detecting the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria isolated from a regional sewage sample to analyze human-associated bacterial community and how the gut microbiome confers resistance to certain antibiotics based on the antibiotic consumption by the human population. She has presented this research at undergraduate research conferences.
Harleen has a particular interest in colorectal surgery due to its complex nature of pathology and use of minimally invasive techniques. Her research project involves identifying the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in elective colorectal surgeries at her institution and recognizing any patient characteristics that could potentially increase the risk of development of SSIs. She is further discovering ways to decrease the occurrence of SSIs at her institution by incorporating various practices that have been proven to improve the rate of infections.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. She likes to do various outdoor activities and always welcomes a challenge with a confident attitude.
