Julia R. Berian is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery at UW-Madison. Dr. Berian completed her medical degree and surgical training at the University of Chicago, followed by fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota. She earned a masters in Health Services and Outcomes Research at Northwestern University and completed a research fellowship at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as the James C. Thompson Geriatric Surgery Research Fellow. During her time at the ACS, she helped secure private foundation funding and led a multidisciplinary stakeholder group in the creation of a new quality improvement initiative from the ACS, the Geriatric Surgery Verification program. Dr. Berian has continued her research focus on improving healtchare processes and patient-centered outcomes for older adults. She is the Chair of the ASCRS Geriatric Special Interest Group. Dr. Berian’s current research program uses systems engineering and implementation science to improve preoperative optimization for older adults.
