Dr. Ronald Bleday is the Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery and Vice Chair for Quality and Safety in the Department of Surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bleday received his MD degree from McGill University in Montreal. After receiving his degree he completed his general surgery residency at Brown University in Providence, RI before doing colon cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. His initial research focused on non-CEA markers for colon cancer. Dr. Bleday continued his specialization by completing a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. During his career Dr. Bleday has been the principal investigator or contributor to various clinical trials on the use of local excision for the treatment of early rectal cancer and the use of laparoscopy versus open surgery for the treatment of colon cancer. Currently he is collaborating with scientists at Harvard Medical School looking into the basic molecular mechanisms of colon cancer biology and immunology. He has also implemented new protocols for “Enhanced Recovery after Surgery” in colorectal surgery patients and multiple other service lines at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Bleday is board certified in both general and colorectal surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a former President of the Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
