As Chief of the Colorectal Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Julio Garcia-Aguilar leads a team of nine colorectal surgeons and directs the team’s clinical and research programs. He is also Co-Director of the Colorectal Cancer Disease Management Team and Director of the Colorectal Cancer Research Center. He has led many government- and institution-funded studies aimed at improving treatment and patients’ quality of life, including Timing of Rectal Cancer Response to Chemoradiation (funded by the National Cancer Institute) and a clinical trial investigating chemoradiotherapy and local excision for treatment of rectal cancer (funded by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group). He currently leads a large multi-institutional study (funded by the National Cancer Institute) that aims to increase survival in rectal cancer patients by optimizing the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and to improve the quality of life by preserving the rectum in patients with a sustained clinical response to neoadjuvant treatment.
