Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Explain the evaluation and treatment of leaks from the anastomosis or pouch.
  • Discuss risk factors for chronic pouchitis and cuffitis. Discuss ways to prevent, evaluate, or treat this common condition in pouch patients.
  • Discuss common poor functional outcomes, how to treat them, and what a textbook functional outcome might look like.
Ileoanal pouches can provide patients who require proctocolectomy with a good quality of life and control of their bowel function. However, complications can be very difficult to treat and often the pouch cannot be salvaged. This symposium will discuss common complications seen in patients with ileoanal pouches and how to manage them, to provide patients with optimal pouch function and quality of life.
