Purpose/Background: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Early detection through screening colonoscopy plays a crucial role in reducing mortality. However, 17-32% of screening colonoscopies are considered sub-optimal due to poor bowel preparation, leading to high rates of missed adenomas. Socioeconomic factors, such as education level and health literacy, may affect patients' comprehension and compliance with bowel preparation instructions, but this relationship is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the impact of patients’ socioeconomic factors and health literacy on the adequacy of bowel preparation, as measured using the Boston Bowel Preparation Score.

Methods/Interventions: This is a prospective, survey-based study of patients undergoing their first outpatient screening colonoscopy at a tertiary colorectal surgery center. Surveys consist of 12 questions to assess the patient's education level, primary language, income, prior colonoscopy history, health literacy screening, and understanding of pre-colonoscopy preparation instructions. The colonoscopies are evaluated by the endoscopist using the Boston Bowel Preparation Score (BBPS).

Results/Outcomes: The study will compare the patients' understanding of colonoscopy preparation and other confounding variables with their Boston Bowel Preparation score.

Conclusion/Discussion: The findings of this study will help identify opportunities for improving patient education and comprehension of screening colonoscopy preparation. Enhanced patient understanding of bowel preparation instructions can result in improved bowel preparation, thereby reducing missed neoplasms and subsequent procedures.
