Segment of colon showed mucosal ischemia with ulceration, numerous thick-walled capillaries, subendothelial fibrin deposits, and eosinophilic thrombi. There were "arteriolized” veins with foci of near occlusion located in submucosa, muscularis propria, and mesentery. Pericolorectal fat necrosis is also noted. VVG (elastic) stains, show that the arteries (identified by an internal elastic lamina) are uninvolved.
