  • Discuss the role of the microbiome in the pathogenesis of anastomotic leak and surgical site infections.
  • Explain the role of the microbiome in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer and IBD.
  • Recognize how manipulating the microbiome during the perioperative period might be advantageous.

The microbiome is a complex system within patients that can have myriad implications on health, disease, and surgical outcomes. We continue to learn more about the role it plays and how we can modify it for the benefit of the patient. However, there is still a lot that is unknown. This symposium will provide an overview on what we know about the microbiome and the role it plays in the development of colorectal cancer, those with IBD, and surgical outcomes.
